Ships

Ships are a means of transportation on water and usually on the seas. Though boats are also used to travel on water, these are smaller in size, used for shorter distances inland on rivers and lakes. Ships usually carry a few boats .

The size of ships is usually measured in terms of Tonnage, which is the cargo capacity of the ship. It is the cargo volume of the ship and is used to assess the fees on the ship for commercial shipping. The Gross Register Tonnage (GRT) is the total internal volume of a ship and the Net Register Tonnage (NRT) is the volume of cargo a ship can carry. Tonnage measurements for all ships built after 2002 are governed by an IMO convention

Other measures of the size of a ship are the overall length, length of the waterline, breadth, depth and the distance between the highest waterline and bottom of the ship. To ensure stability there is a line called the freeboard mark or loadline mark on the ship's hull which indicates the maximum safe loading level.
